cozy cottage christmas

Dallas interior designer's cozy cottage Christmas

We love styling homes every day of the year, but it is extra special to be able to decorate a client's home for Christmas! You might remember the Glam Winter Wonderland from last year, and this year's transformation is nearly a style opposite! It just goes to show you that there are so many ways to do Christmas!

We began this project as we begin any project - with a Mood Board.

Classic Christmas mood board

The vibe was classic, cozy, and fresh. We wanted to double down on natural (and faux-natural) materials, whites, evergreen toned greens, lots of white, and a bit of rich red.

Hot tip: If you want to elevate your Christmas decor, limit your decorations to just a few colors. It will instantly make everything feel more high-end and pulled together.

We used quite a bit of what our clients' already owned and loved and layered in a few new, classic pieces with a modern twist. I hesitate to even call it "modern" because it's not at all sterile or cold; quite the opposite actually. More like clean lines and forms without too much fussy detail. Except where we added LOTS of detail. It's all about balance!

This space really shines best in video, so here's a little tour:

For kicks, here are a few still photos as well! Please forgive my iPhone photography; there wasn't time for the full camera setup on this one!

front door Christmas wreath with gold ribbon

We used their existing wreath and swapped the previously navy ribbon for an antique gold velvet ribbon. That theme carries throughout the home.

Christmas stair garland with gold bells and orange garland

This is the most fun stair garland we've ever put together! Faux cedar branches form the base. We layered in fairy lights, more antique gold ribbon in two widths, homemade orange garland, and gold bells. I was joking that I kept oscillating between "modern cottage" and "over the top Anthropologie"! I think we struck the right cozy balance.

homemade Christmas dried orange garland

The garland repeats in the kitchen over the vent hood. If you've never made a dried orange garland before, you should give it a try! It's a great, simple craft that you can do with kids. Full instructions here!

vintage nativity scene with mushroom candles for natural vibe

We kept the shelf styling simple with a little extra greenery tucked around a vintage Nativity scene with some new mushroom shaped candles, leaning into the natural vibe.

glitzy bar Christmas decorations

Things got slightly more glitzy at the bar. Seemed only natural.

christmas decor for entry bench

A sweet faux tree and holiday inspired pillows dress up the entry bench.

dried orange garland and faux fur Christmas tree skirt

The fireplace mantle received the same treatment as the stair garland, and we added more dried orange garland at the tree to tie it all together. The faux fur tree skirt was something they already owned, and it worked perfectly!

This big ol' coffee table is screaming for a 1000 piece jigsaw puzzle.

holiday plaid Christmas throw pillows

A final touch - a pair of holiday plaid pillows!
